Dinosaur National Monument, August 31, 2012

The Dinosaur National Monument is located off of US 40 with part of the Monument in Colorado and part in Utah.  This is the view from the first overlook on the Colorado side of the Monument.

The best group of inbeded fossils I have seen are on the Utah side.  The land is very dry except for the green where the river is used for irrigation.  You can see the difference in this picture takes from the fossil site.  The river has been around for millions of years is the reason so many fossil bones were preserved.

You start at the visitors center and ride a trolly up to the actual site.

This is the rock wall containing the fossil bones.  The site was discovered in 1906 and excavated until 1926 when the permit ran out.  This wall of rock was left with fossils exposed.  The site was left exposed until the 1950's when a building was built to protest the site.  That building proved to be unstable and today there is a new and better building at the site.

Another picture of some of the fossil bones.  Click to enlarge the picture and you will get a better view of the fossil bones.

Inside the building with a view of visitors looking at the fossils.  Some of the fossil bones are where you can touch them.  I have been to several National Monument sites that are set aside to preserve fossils and this is the best one I have visited.  It is really out of the way but worth a visit if you are near that area.
