Durban, South Africa

Durban is our second stop in South Africa. The shuttle took us to uShaka Mall. It is a combination mall and water park with rides and shows. I though it was a great place to be dropped because it was also right by one of the many beaches in Durban. It was also a very safe place. Durban is one of those cities where we were warned to be very careful. We only saw the main part of the city but there is a Township nearby and unemployment is around 35%. Durban hosted the world soccer championships several years age and they really have used the King Shaka (the Zulu King) to help attract tourist. The tourist are mostly white so I wonder what King Shaka would think. The beach was divided between swimmers and surfers. There was a dangerous animal exhibit and the lizard was their outside exhibit. He was very large. There was a band playing on the sidewalk above the beach and a group of men dressed as warriors came by chanting. All in all it was a good day. We are out of the bad heat. Today the high is around 75 so a very pleasant day. Two sea days before Cape Town. The seas were rough last night but not so bad I could not sleep. There are two pictures of the sculptures on the beach. The gentlemen in the pictures decorate them and ask for money as a thank you. They were glad to take American Dollars and to have their pictures taken. They were just some of the unemployed trying to make a little money. One Dollar is equal to 9 Rand.

I took money out of the ATM and it gave me my balance in Rand. Looking at that I am very wealthy.
